And Much Fun Was Had

As I take a quick break from studying for a social psychology exam, I wanted to regale you with a lighthearted tale from today’s WoW adventures.

I was playing my level 34-ish Horde shaman, resto style, and was pretty damned bored. Low level healing, in my experience, can either be really boring or really frustrating. It’s rarely ever been “fun”. For instance, on my low level discipline priest, I find myself either boredly casting Renew and then waiting to refresh it, or healing like mad and running out of mana. There really is no middle ground, at least not yet. On my little shaman, I found myself loathing the very class mechanic that persuaded me to try resto in the first place: earth shield.

Oh earth shield…I was so interested in trying this out (for I am a simpleton, and its sound pleases me) and so I rolled a shaman purely because I wanted to make rocks float around the tank. But woe is me! Now this helpful little spell drives me insane! Earth shield is a lot like that one DPS who thinks they need to heal too. You’re charging up a big heal for the tank when WHAM. Suddenly his health pops up to full and you waste a chunk of mana on nothing. Upon closer inspection you notice that the shadow priest (or the ret paladin, or even worse the damn feral druid) is doing your job for you! And there isn’t even that much of a job to do, because low level tanks don’t need a whole lot of assistance in the health department. So you grumble quietly to yourself and tolerate this person as they stomp on your little healer toes. That quiet irritation is what I feel for earth shield. It’s sniping my heals. Got a big heal coming for ya – POW! Earth shield crits for 300! Heal is wasted. Glare at earth shield.

I digress! I was running dungeon after dungeon, and after the tenth time through Scarlet Monastery’s graveyard I was pretty damned bored. Cast earth shield on the tank. Pick nose. Refresh earth shield. Eat booger. Bored.

And then I zoned in to this wonderful group who caught me entirely off guard. The tank started off by apologizing for his gear, so I assumed this was going to suck. And then this tank, whether by sheer insanity or by some carefully executed ploy to derail my boredom, began pulling the entire dungeon in one seamless pull. It was all I could do to keep up. It was all I could do to keep him in line of sight. I saw a dent in my mana. Suddenly earth shield was my very best friend ever, and I apologized profusely for ever saying disparaging things about its mother behind its back. Our escapades went something like this:

Tank: *pulling everything withing a ten mile radius and running like the wind*
Me: OHGODOHGODOHGOD *healing like some sort of deranged psycho, spamming buttons as if buttons are going out of style*
Tank: *at 35% health, dives behind a wall and laughs maniacally with 40,000 mobs smashing him in the junk*
Me: OHGODINHEAVENWHY! *imagine an orc lady doing a running leap out from behind a wall, sliding face first along the stone floor, convinced the tank is going to die*
Earth shield: *smoothly* Chill out, my lady, I’ll handle this…*casually crits for insane healing, saves the day, and coolly saunters off into the sunset on a white horse*
Me: Oh thank God-AUGH! *tank runs off again, and the whole thing starts over*

And it was fun. I healed like mad. I pulled off things no level 30-something shaman with only two heals should ever be able to pull off. I was complimented. We cleared the Armory in 7 minutes in one long, crazy pull. We queued again and again together, all five of us, and wreaked unimaginable havoc on everything that dared stand in our way. I didnt even care that the hunter was rolling need on caster gear.

And then that tank regrettably left, and I figured that the next tank would be cautious and boring and I would return to loathing earth shield for stealing my job. But no! The new tank, after a few minutes, decided he too was righteously bad ass and pulled huge gobs of Razorfen Kraul all at once, and off we went!

I havent had that much fun running low level stuff in ages. I was having so much fun I nearly forgot about my studies, which I shall presently return to. Good night every body, and enjoy your time in WoW.

  1. i totally agree with the leveling a disc priest and just waiting to recast nenew…but once you get the atonement talent, it’s actually not so bad. i can sit there and just dps the *entire* time! (it’s slightly OP, just sayin’) i actually kinda feel bad for the other people in the group that are actually there to dps and they’re getting out dps’d by the healer… >.> it’s kinda amusing though 😛
